The Kerryman (South Kerry Edition)
Ten commandments for the modern era by Fr Con
KILGARVAN Parish Priest Fr Con Buckley certainly impressed as he launched his book ‘Learn from me’ last Sunday in The Killarney Heights Hotel.
The parish priest was launching his first book along with the help of Dr Michael Mullins and the event proved a huge success. Brendan O’Sullivan was also present and read out some of his poems and stories.
The book was written in honour of the late Fr Pat Moore who inspired Fr Buckley to start writing. It has been in the mak- ing for almost five years and will help raise money for ‘Simon’ in support of the homeless community in Kerry.
The book’s main message is about human happiness and how the Sermon of Christ can and should be used find it.
In his book, Fr Buckley has rewritten the 10 Commandments to suit the modern era.
“I did it in more positive terms. I wrote in a way that shows your morality is on the inside, not the outside” Fr Buckley told The Kerryman . “The book is almost a guide to have peace and goodness and mercy in life” he said.
The book also highlights modern day speakers, poets and movies that display the same values that the church shows.
“We take a look at speakers like Gandhi and Martin Luther King and how, even though they don’t share the same religion, they shared the same beliefs that the Catholic Church holds”.
Fr Buckley said that people of all religious levels will enjoy it. “It’s a book that anyone can read and enjoy,” he added.
Fr Buckley also uses the Christmas Carol as a comparison in his book and how the character of Ebenezer Scrooge eventually found happiness.
The books that were sold raised an impressive €800 which will all be donated to the Simon Community.
