The Kerryman (South Kerry Edition)
Heavens smile upon the Kerry Camino pilgrims
THE sixth year of the annual ‘Kerry Camino’ weekend has been declared a “roaring success” with walkers from Australia, Switzerland, Portugal, Spain and the United States taking part in the three day walk.
The walk, which Mike O’Donnell, an event organiser, said had “runaway numbers”, was held in glorious weather as it started from St John’s Church in Tralee on Friday morning and finished on Sunday at St James Church in Dingle.
Day one of the trail saw hikers travelling from St John’s Church in Tralee, through Blennerville, before they finished up for the first night at the Railway Tavern in Camp.
Day two saw walkers continue on from Camp, onwards to Inch Beach before they finished the second day with a barbecue in Hanafins Bar in Annascaul.
Finally, the third day saw the hardy group round off their journey by travelling the last leg to St James’ Church in Dingle, where they received their certificates of completion.
“The weekend is going from strength to strength every year. We had a barbecue in Hanafins Bar in Annascaul on Saturday and let’s just say that I had a hard time getting people back on the road after that! They were having such a good time.” Mike said with a smile on Tuesday.
“The success of the Kerry Camino is demonstrated by the number of people from abroad that we had with us over the weekend,” Mike continued.
“We had a mother and daughter from Boston, we had a man over from Australia with his friends and a few others as well from Spain, Portugal and other parts of Europe.
“It’s a great honour and achievement to have people from all over coming to Kerry,” he finished.
