Racing returns to Killarney with the May Racing Festival

WITH the best of winter racing behind us for another year, now is a good time to start looking forward to summer racing and there is no place better than Killarney Races. The action kicks off on Sunday May 13th and runs until Tuesday,15th offering 3-days of the very best of Festival Racing. Sunday and Monday are both National Hunt cards, while Tuesday is an all flat card.

Sales/Marketing Manager of Killarney Racecourse, Peter O’Reilly, said he is eagerly awaiting the opening day of the 2018 racing season which promises to be an action-packed event with the very best of National Hunt and flat racing, and many more attraction­s ensuring a great day out for everyone.

The first race on Sunday is at 1.20pm with the feature race on the card being the Grade B ‘Redweld Stables Handicap Hurdle’ with a prize fund of €50,000.

Monday the 14th is ‘Killarney National Night’ with the running of the ‘Laurels Pub & Restaurant Killarney National’ over an extended 3m-2f. Last year’s race was won by Auvergant in the familiar colours of JP McManus. JP will this year be trying to make it 3-in-a-row, having won the last two runnings of the event. Killarney Racecourse is looking forward to another strong renewal with a prize fund of €40,000 up for grabs.

Monday also features the ‘An Riocht Chase’ with Ballycasey, last year’s winner, hoping to recapture the race again for trainer Willie Mullins. First race on Monday is at 5.05p.m.

Tuesday’s race card (May 15th) is a flat card and the first race is off at 5.40p.m. The feature race is the ‘EBF Median Auction Fillies Race’ won last year by Bumbasina for the Willie McCreery yard.

With almost €400,000 in prize money on offer over three days, it promises to be a great racing festival. All that’s left now is for you to come along and enjoy the occasion.
