‘Lovely girls’ get behind the cause
FATHER Ted’s words, “don’t they all have lovely bottoms”, had a ring of truth on Sunday night in Kenmare when 10 ‘lovely girls’ took to the stage for a Fr Ted style parody competition.
They may not have been your typical ‘lovely girls’ but the 10 local men who took on the challenge of transforming into ladies for charity, certainly made a grand entrance when they took to the stage at PF McCarthy’s.
Looking completely transformed, in full makeup and dresses, the 10 male models took to the stage for a Rose of Tralee type contest with Senator Mark Daly, former Rose of Tralee Mary Hickey and Cllr Dan McCarthy in the role of the judges delivering their verdicts on each of the contestants.
The judges’ votes, along with the votes of the public, combined to pick this year’s winner of the Lovely Ladies Contest – Nigel Higgins aka Nigella Lawless.
MC for the evening was Dan Sweeney who also provided the music and each of the ‘lovely ladies’ also did their own party piece after answering a series of questions, which drew more than a few laughs from the audience.
Deputy Michael Healy Rae dropped in for a look and, in keeping with the Fr Ted theme, Fr Jack, Fr Dougal and Fr Ted along with Mrs Doyle and a host of nuns were also in attendance.
The aim of the night was to raise funds for Rockmount Day Care Centre in Kilgarvan, which is this year’s chosen recipient of funds from the Vikingdom Raft Race in Kenmare. The committee behind the raft race came up with the fundraiser to bolster fundraising effort for their chosen charity and just under €1,000 was raised.
The raft race takes place on Saturday, June 23, and if this weekend’s entertainment is an indicator of what is to come than Vikingdom Raft Race will be another great event.
