‘PROBUS is a group of people with similar interests’

- By STEPHEN FERNANE

TRALEE woman Lily Tangney is proud to be a member of the Tralee-Churchill PROBUS Club whose members meet every Wednesday at The Tankard Bar & Restaurant in Fenit. Founded in 2004, this is the only mixed gender club and just like its sister groups, it too enjoys a rich and varied social itinerary. Below, Lily talks about how much she enjoys PROBUS and what new members can expect.

“PROBUS clubs are so well attended that there is a waiting list for membership which is why I joined the Churchill club as it was the smallest and had no waiting list. We meet every Wednesday and we try and keep ourselves occupied doing various things. Our most recent outing was a visit to see Fenit lighthouse, thanks to John McGibney who runs trips to the lighthouse and it was a wonderful day. We’ve been on day trips to places like Glenstal Abbey and we also enjoy lunches at Easter and Christmas. We keep ourselves busy and well-informed on what’s happening around us. For example, if there is anything of interest in Siamsa Tire, we’ll go and it’s a lovely active past time and you meet with likeminded people.

Lily added: “More importantly, we’re of a similar age and it’s nice to interact with people who have lived through the same time period as you have. This means we’re all talking in the one voice. We’re looking forward to the national rally and all 10 PROBUS clubs have helped to get this show on the road and its coming to fruition now. We’re looking forward to it and it’s going to be fantastic meeting fellow members, both in Kerry and nationally. A good many members are looking forward to visiting Tralee.

“I would recommend PROBUS to anyone who is approaching retirement age or anyone taking early retirement. You basically have a readymade group of people of a like mind with similar interests. Our intention is to enjoy the years we have left and we keep active in both body and mind.”
