Tralee Harriers run away with Quill Cup
LAST Sunday saw the Kerry Athletics Junior, Senior and Masters Track and Field Championships take place in Castleisland. Most clubs had a strong showing and a very competitive afternoon in the Senior Men category saw the youngsters of Tralee Harriers, with the help of some seasoned veterans, literally run away with the Quill Cup.
The team was, on throws Patsy O’Connor (team captain), Alan O’Connor and Danny O’Connor. On track and jumps Travane Morrison, Oisin Spillane, Luke O’Carroll, Basit Oyebanji and Cillian Griffin.
Tralee Harriers AC also topped the rankings in the Senior and Junior Women’s events with Lios Tuathail taking top score in the Junior Men’s events. The Tralee Harriers jumpers were in great form taking long and triple jump titles in senior men, Luke O’Carroll; senior women, Solange Diogo and junior women, Elinor Dennison. Multiple gold medal winners on the day were Travane Morrison, Tralee Harriers, in senior men’s 100m and 200m; Ben Sheehan, Lios Tuathail, in junior men’s 100m, 200m and long jump; Lauren O’Grady, St Brendan’s, junior women’s shot, javelin and discus; Gary Randles, Kenmare, junior men’s hammer, shot and WFD; Mairead O’Neill, Gneeveguilla, senior women’s hammer and WFD.
The Master athletes were also in flying form, with men and women aged 35 to 77 taking part in track and field events, including the women’s WFD, which was only added to the programme this year. THE Kerry Colleges Track and Field Championships took place last Tuesday at the An Riocht Track in Castleisland. Organised again by Damien and Adrienne McLoughlin, the event was very well organised and with over 500 athletes taking part, with representation from the majority of secondary schools in the area.
Although the weather was a little misty for the majority of the day it did not put off the athletes, many of whom produced fine performances. Mercy Mounthawk Tralee were the Shield winners again this year, taking both the girls and boys titles by quite a margin.

Next up is the North Munster Schools in Castleisland, which started on Tuesday and conclude on Thursday, while the South Munster Schools are in CIT today (Wednesday) and Friday. The Munster finals are on May 19 in Castleisland.
LIOS Tuathail trio of Vinny O’Leary, John Heaphy and Mike Kissane won silver in the Munster Marathon championship in Limerick last Sunday. This was the first year that club had a team in this event and a great effort was put in by all three men to secure the team medals.
AN Ríocht athletes Shona Heaslip and James Doran represented the club on the international stage in Birmingham last Sunday in the SimplyHealth Great Birmingham 10k. Shona finished in a terrific second place in a time of 34.19 while James placed 14th overall and third in the M35 category in a time of 32.49.
HEASLIP also heads the women’s selection of four set to represent Ireland at the European 10,000m Cup which is incorporated into the Night of 10,000m PBs at Parliament Hill in London on May 19. Shona is joined on the team by Ann Marie McGlynn, Emma Mitchell and Fionnuala Ross.
