A fitting tribute to Helene’s artistic flair
THERE was touching tribute to the late Helene Brunicardi recently, as a selection of the art teacher’s paintings were showcased at an exhibition and sale hosted by Killarney Community College’s Art Department.
Helene herself taught at the college for many years. She passed away earlier this year, and her brother Darragh and his wife Phil thought it fitting to donate a number of her art materials and paintings to the Community College.
In turn, art teacher Michelle Mahony came to the decision to hold an exhibition and sale featuring the works donated, in a fund-raiser for the Kerry Hospice Foundation. This, everyone agreed, was a fitting tribute to Helene’s memory.
Works went on display in the college’s art room, with staff and students, as well as a number of retired teachers, calling in to enjoy the exhibition.
A funds presentation of €1,550 took place just over a week ago, with Darragh, Phil, Fr Niall Howard, and Kerry Hospice Foundation representatives Pat Doolan and Angela Curran present for the occasion.
Some of Helene’s work is on permanent display in the college, including in the staffroom, which once served as her classroom. Kerri McCarthy of Killarney Community College was quick to acknowledge how much character Helene’s work has brought to college.
“Helene showed a great love and passion for the landscape she was surrounded by and also for the detail within nature,” she said.
“A number of her paintings capture the beauty of flowers and the changes that the seasons bring to our surroundings.
“Ms Mahony was absolutely overwhelmed by the response from staff, retired staff and students of the College.
“She would like to say a huge thank you to all who donated and purchased some of Helene’s artwork and is delighted that the donation was made in Helene Brunicardi’s memory to such a worthy cause.”
