Jack takes gold at St Brendan’s awards evening
JACK Galvin left Saint Brendan’s College Annual Awards Evening with the most prestigious prize the famous secondary school can confer – but he was far from the lone star on a night that saw some 60 awards handed out.
The event took place in recent days at the school Chapel, and Jack went home with the Gold Medal for his outstanding performance in the 2016/17 Leaving Cert, and was joint-recipient of the Mac Curtain Memorial Award for Maths and Physics.
The event itself was overseen by teacher Gary McGrath, who had a busy night with so many prizes to be awarded.
The Guest of Honour, another of the most prestigious accolades the school can bestow upon someone, was a former student, Tim Regan.
Tim is a former Kerry footballer with further sporting experience at international level in basketball, and he has also taught in the Sem and served as Head of Science at the Department of Education.
Aside from Jack, the outstanding students in Mathematics and Physics; Gaeilge, and Business were also rewarded for their performances, and Cian Buckley O’Sullivan (Maths and Physics); Luke Casey and Kevin D’Arcy (Gaeilge); and David Shaw (Business) all went away with those prizes for their performances in the 2017 Leaving Cert.
“The Board of Management Prize for Leaving Cert Applied students went to Adam Fleming,” Principal Seán Coffey went on to explain to The Kerryman.
“We also rewarded the current crop of fifth and sixthyear students, with more than 60 prizes handed out at our Awards Evening.
“Students were recognised for their community spirit, leadership, diligence and effort,” Mr Coffey added.
The present crop of fifth and sixth-year students also received certificates having completed their school year, and they now look ahead to this year’s Leaving Cert.
