St Brigid’s mark their year’s end
KERRY County Council CEO Moira Murrell, a past pupil, was Guest of Honour as students of St Brigid’s Secondary School celebrated its annual award ceremony last week.
Held in the school gym and packed to capacity, parents students and staff alike were not short on entertainment from music and singing by students, school choir, and Ora Mordant.
Ms Murrell told the students of the importance of education and her memories of the school, while encouraging students to look at the benefits of returning to Kerry after seeing the world. One of the highlights of the day followed the awards, when a sixth-year slide-show preceded a congratulatory speech by Principal Róisín Moore to the students. She also acknowledged the work of office and canteen staff, as well as the school’s caretakers.
Among the many awards presented on the day was the fourth annual CEIST Award, with Siobhan Burns picking up the perpetual trophy for promoting human development, achieving quality in learning, respect, appreciating community, and being both just and responsible. A special award was also presented to Emma Quirke on behalf of the Kerry Stars Special Olympics Club, recognising her work with Kerry Special Olympics swimming at Castlerosse on Fridays.
All that was left to attend to was the prestigious Orla Benson Award, accompanied by a bursary sponsored by the late former pupil’s family.
Teaching staff looked for a student who participated fully with school life; co-operated with peers and staff; showed leadership qualities, a sense of humour, and a zest for life. Taking this into account, Ciara Carroll received the prize and a generous standing ovation from students and staff, capping a wonderful day.
