Cronin brothers are the top two seeds for Circuit of Munster Rally

- MOTORSPORT Sean Moriarty

TWO brothers representing Killarney and District Motor Club are the top two seeds in this Sunday’s Circuit of Munster.

Multiple British champion Keith Cronin will start at no.1 in his Hyundai R5. He and co-driver Mikie Galvin are using the event as a test ahead of the Ypres Rally, round two of the British championship in three weeks’ time.

Keith’s brother Daniel will start at no.2 in his Ford Fiesta R5 with co-driver Shane Buckley on the notes. All four are members of Killarney and District Motor Club. While the brothers have competed against each other in the past it is unusual as they are both involved in the family business in West Cork and when one is rallying the other tends to stay at home and look after things there.

Sean Hegarty is the top Kerry Motor Club entrant on the entry list, co-driving for Keith Lyons in another Fiesta, they start at 11.

Mike Quinn/ Tony Healy and Tim Enright and Stephen Buckley (both Escorts) are two more KMC crews in the top 20 seeds while Darren Young and Pa Lawlor start at 24 in their Honda Civic.

TRIBUTES TO KEVIN FLYNN

LOCAL motorsport fans paid tribute to Kevin Flynn who died tragically on Saturday.

The Castlemaine man was a stalwart of Killarney and District Motor Club and could always be relied on to do the necessary but inglorious work like pre-even stage set up. He was also an accomplished rally driver and competed occasionally in his Toyota Corolla.

CAVAN RALLY

BRIAN Doherty was the top Kerry finisher on Sunday’s Cavan Rally. The Glenflesk co-driver finished 14th alongside New York-based driver Kevin Rowley in a Ford Fiesta.

BELGIUM RALLY

LONDON-BASED Killarney man Mick Smith was the top historic finisher in the Flanders International Rally Challenge section of the ORC Canal Rally in Belgium on Sunday.

The Hillman Avenger driver finished second in his class but his local rival was not registered for FIRC awards allowing Smith take the spoils.
