COMMUNITY GAMES

he community games for the greater Kenmare area took place on Wednesday 16th May 2018, in glorious sunshine at Fr Breen Park Kenmare. Kilgarvan athletes had a lot of success and we hope to publish the names of the people who did well over the next few weeks.

SCHOOL ATHLETICS

In the Munster Schools Athletics Final held at An Riocht Track Castleisla­nd, Christine McCarthy placed joint 2nd in the senior girls long jump final with a height of 1.55m. In the intermedia­te girls 2km walk Aoife O’Reilly placed 3rd , both girls thus qualified for the All Ireland Finals which will be held in Tullamore on Saturday 2nd June 2018. Michael O’Reilly placed 5th in the boys U-16 mile final. Rhona Randles had qualified for the girls 1500m intermedia­te final but due to illness was not able to take part. We wish her a speedy recovery. Rhona’s team mate Alyce O’Connor placed 2nd with a PB time of 3.51.94 second. Alyce also qualified for the All Ireland finals.

KNOCK

The annual Pioneer pilgrimage to Knock took place last Sunday 20th March 2018 led by John Lucey. 27 people travelled on a 34 seater bus which departed the village at 6:15am.

They were John Lucey, Noreen Hyde, Mary Dineen, Mary O’Sullivan, Tadgh O’Donoghue, Ellen O’Donoghue, Tom Twomey, Margaret Twomey, Christy Heffernan, Bella Casey, Margaret Lehane, Betty O’Neill, Kate O’Neill, Tom JC Randles, Tommy Mullins, John O’Connor, Bridie O’Connor, Stevie O’Callaghan, Breda O’Shea, Sean Foley, Mila Rono, Mary Kelleher, Kitty Healy, Anne Randles, Mary O’Sullivan, Ann Marie O’Sullivan and Kathleen O’Sullivan.

There was a stop in Gort, Co. Galway at O’Sullivan’s Hotel around 9:00am for breakfast and again for an evening meal. Knock was looking great. Both the original Church which is the Knock Parish Church and the Apparition Chapel reopened the weekend of our Pilgrimage after being refurbishe­d during the winter. They are looking splendid now and so also is the grounds of Knock Shrine.

Fr. Con joined the Pilgrimage in the afternoon. The weather was great, just an occasional light mist. It was a lovely day out. Rosaries and Prayers were recited and a great sing song in the bus which added to the enjoyment of the day.

DEATH

Denis O’Sullivan, Kilafada, Kilgarvan passed away on Monday 21st May 2018. His funeral Mass took place at St. Patrick’s Church, Kilgarvan, on Tuesday 22nd May 2018 with burial afterwards in the local Cemetery. To his sister Margaret, brother-in-law Joe, nephew Mark, niece Amy, and extended family we express our deepest sympathy.

Danny McCarthy, Rathfarnam, Dublin and Kenmare, Co. Kerry, passed away on 18th May 2018. Danny was married to a niece of Julia Healy, Barnastook­a and Kilgarvan. To Danny’s wife Mary, children Gerard, Shona, Daniel and Kevin, Julia and extended family we express our deepest sympathy

VINTAGE FAIR

The annual Vintage Fair will be held in Kilgarvan village on Sunday June 3rd 2018. There will be live street music from the Ballingear­y Pipe Band, Vintage Farm Machinery, Draw and Raffle, Spot Prizes, Prize for the best dressed Vintage Outfit and History of the GAA in Healy Rae’s Lounge. The vintage club are looking for old photograph­s and antiques for display here also. There will be a Farrier at the fair who will shoe horses on the day. Closed buildings will re-open for the day including the old post office. The Festival will be launched on Friday 1st of June 2018 in the Kilgarvan Community Centre at 9:00pm.
