HOMES FOR OUR SENIOR CITIZENS

A Kerry County Councillor has called on Kerry County Council to liaise with all voluntary housing groups in the county and initiate a Homes for Our Senior Citizens Scheme whereby houses will be constructed/purchased in each town and village throughout Kerry where demand exists.

The Fianna Fail Councillor made the call at this month’s meeting of Kerry County Council where he stated that our senior citizens are now living longer and require to be closer to the Shops, Church, Post Office, Services, etc. The Killorglin councillor said such a scheme will also help address loneliness in our communities for many of our senior citizens.

Councillor Cahill who has been very vocal in regards to Housing matters said I am informed that voluntary housing bodies such as Cluid and others have funding for building and purchasing houses.

We should be working hand in hand with these agencies and obtain the maximum number of properties in every town and village in Kerry. This is yet another way of helping to address the housing and homeless crisis in Kerry. After all the successful applicants will be coming off Kerry County Council’s Housing list stated Councillor Cahill.

REPLY: The Department of Housing, Planning, Community & Local Government provide funding to facilitate delivery through either construction or acquisition of housing accommodation to cater for the priority groups under the Capital Assistance Scheme where the groups are as follows: elderly; homeless persons (including care leavers exiting State care on reaching the age of 18); people with a disability, with a particular emphasis on moving people with disability from a congregated settings into community based living.

Kerry County Council issued a call for CAS Proposals in 2017 and proposals continue to be accepted on a ‘rolling basis’. The Council have a very active working relationship with a number of Approved Housing Bodies and will continue to work together in partnership with them to delivery Housing for the priority groups.
