Kerry families encouraged to get pedalling for Bike Week
KERRY Recreation & Sports Partnership, in collaboration with local cycling clubs, are inviting families of all ages to participate in a series of forthcoming events for National Bike Week. Such events include the ‘Pedal in the Parks’ and last year’s successful ‘Any Bike Will Do’ themed cycle.
These events are aimed at getting all the family involved in a cycle in the county’s amenities and encouraging more families to cycle together.
Pedal in the Park is now in its eighth year which is made possible through the support of National Bike Week, which this year runs from June 9 to June 17. In Kerry, many events will take place during the week and in the days after.
Pedal in the Park Tralee, in collaboration with the Chain Gang and Kingdom Cycling Clubs, takes place Friday evening June 8 at 7pm. Participants will meet at Tralee Bay Wetlands Centre. There will be two routes depending on the age of the child – 4km for 5 to 8-year olds cycling along the cycle path into Tralee Town Park and 8km for nine to 14-year-olds cycling along the canal.
Pedal in the Park Listowel, in collaboration with Finuge Freewheelers and Kerry Crusaders Cycling Clubs, takes place Sunday morning June 10 at 11am with a meeting point of Listowel Community Centre. The route will be in Listowel Town Park, presenting a choice of two distances – 2.5km for five to eight-year-olds and 7km for 9 to 14-year olds.
Pedal in the Park Killarney, in collaboration with Killarney Cycling Club and the Ring of Kerry Cycle Committee, takes place Friday evening, July 6, at 7pm, meeting Killarney National Park. The route will be in the Park, presenting a choice of two distances – 5km for 5 to 8-year olds and 10km for 9 to 14-year olds.
All pedal in the park events are free and online registration is now open on kerry recreation and sports partnership website - www.kerryrecreationandsports.ie
“Pedal in the Park gives both young children and adults the opportunity to jointly participate in physical activity while having fun. And over the years it has been wonderful to see several generations of families taking part in what is ultimately a family fun occasion,” said Córa Carrigg, Co-Ordinator of Kerry Recreation and Sports Partnership.
Now in its second year the ‘Any Bike Will Do Cycle’ will takes place on Monday, June 18 from 7pm to 8.30pm; the meeting point for this cycle is close to O’Donnells on the Mounthawk/Bracker O’Regan Road. The cycle will take in the various cycle paths around the town as well as a short spin on some of the lanes between Tralee and Blennerville.
