BASKETBALL NEWS

From August 9th to 18th this year, Sarajevo in Bosnia will host the under-16 boys FIBA European Championships Group B. The twelve players that will represent Ireland at this major event was recently named by head coach Mike Lynch, and included among them is Rónán Collins from Gneeveguilla. Rónán’s selection has been proudly welcomed by Gneeveguilla Basketball Club, where he has played since he was an under-10 player. It is quite an achievement for a club in only its eleventh year to be able to count an international player among it’s members. In fact, all of the Collins family are involved with Gneeveguilla BC as players, coaches, and administrators.

Rónán was first selected for the larger development national squad nearly two years ago following a series of excellent performances for club, school (Pobalscoil Sliabh Luachra, Rathmore) and school divisional teams. What followed was a lot of long trips and long training sessions around the country, as well as continuing the good work at home too. He survived cut after cut as the squad was successively trimmed to bring it to the final twelve players. Between now and August there will be a lot more preparation to be done and many more miles to travel. It will all be worth it when Rónán will pull on the green jersey to play Great Britain, Sweden, Portugal, Romania, and Luxembourg in the group stages, and more in the knockout matches next August. To support Rónán’s efforts and his amazing achievement, the Gneeveguilla Basketball Club are having a fundraising walk starting at the Club Bar in Gneeveguilla village on Sunday the 24th June at 5pm. Registration from 4.00pm. Followed by BBQ afterwards. Please support. Everyone welcome.
