PLAYING FOR CORK
In recent weeks we have witnessed prominent players starring for Cork teams who have Kilgarvan connections. In the recent Munster U-17 minor football game between Cork and Kerry, which was played in Tralee, one of the best Cork forwards was number 10 Hugh Murphy. Hugh’s brother Jack was on the Cork minor football team last year. Hugh is the son Marietta Hickey, formally of main street Kilgarvan, Hugh’s father Michael, is from Portmagee South Kerry. Hugh will be under age again next year for this competition and many of this year’s team players that lost to Kerry will be under age again next year, so we will be on the watch out for them. Best of luck Hugh. In Hurling one of the very prominent backs on the very impressive Cork senior hurling team has been Colm Spillane, from the parish of Castlelyons. Colm’s grandmother very much alive and well, is Nancy O’Leary. Nancy from Bridgeville, Slaughts, Kilgarvan, has lived in Cork for many years.
Also on the Cork senior hurling panel from time to time has been Owen Healy, Owen has played under age hurling for Cork. Over the next few years we will watch his development with great interest and he too may make it on to the Cork senior hurling team. Owens’s Kilgarvan connection is that his grandfather, Danny Healy, sister Julia, was from Barnastooka. Undoubtedly this is a growing list of players making good with other Counties and with strong Kilgarvan connections. The most recent and present player is Cian O’Sullivan of the Dublin senior football team. His father John, of Rogers Bar Kilgarvan and mother Noreen, from Ballyhar. Some decades ago it was Sean Og O’Hailpin who was Captain of the senior hurling team in 2005.
