Local celebrities get behind bus fundraiser
‘IT’S more than just transport, it’s a vital social outlet’ is how Agnes Rooney describes the importance of the ‘Buy a Bus Campaign’ which is one of the beneficiaries of the 2018 Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle.
The Healy-Rae clan and Colm Cooper recently put their shoulder to the wheel and while they might not be taking part in the cycle, it hasn’t prevented them getting behind a brilliant cause.
Keeping these buses on the road gives people with special needs a reason to get up every morning and lead a fulfilled day of friendship and love. Kerry has 17 buses and the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle is a vital source of fundraising.
“We’re obviously appealing for cyclist to help raise money for us, plus you don’t even need to take part in the cycle this year to raise money,” said Agnes.
The ‘Buy a Bus’ Campaign is all about being able to continue transporting people to Day Care Centres, hospital appointments, social training and other every day activities. With 17 buses on the road it means maintenance and replacement of buses is constantly needed and last year’s Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle helped buy three buses.
Agnes explains how her own sister is collected from home in Fossa every morning and waits with anticipation by the window for the bus to arrive. She loves her journey and loves the banter and friendships the bus environment creates.
“Most of us take our travel plans for granted. But these buses help people, and their families, in a special way. It’s more than just transport it’s a vital social outlet and a link between the outside world and their loving families.”
