Nephew of JFK visits IT Tralee
DR Timothy Shriver – a member of the Kennedy dynasty and nephew of JFK – was in Tralee last week to deliver a keynote address at IT Tralee.
The Chairman of Special Olympics – which was founded by his mother Eunice Kennedy – is the holder of the UNESCO Chair in Inclusive Physical Education and sport.
IT Tralee became the first third level institution in the world to receive a UNESCO Chair in 2013 and Dr Shriver was named as Chairholder last year. Last week’s visit was Dr Shriver’s first trip to Tralee since his appointment
During his visit Dr Shriver delivered a public address at IT Tralee on Thursday at a public event where he also met members of local Special Olympic clubs.
The previous evening he addressed members of Kerry County Council at a Civic Reception held in his honour
Later that evening he was guest of honour at a Gala dinner held at Ballygarry Hotel to mark his first visit.
During his visit Dr Shriver was also shown the progress to date on the €16.5 million Kerry Sports Academy at ITT’s north campus, which is due to open in January 2019.
Dr Shriver said that the UNESCO Chair at IT Tralee will be at the forefront of supporting inclusivity worldwide.
“The partnership between Special Olympics and the UNESCO Chair at IT Tralee gives us the opportunity to join our efforts to build a world that accepts and provides for diversity as a norm,” Dr Shriver said.
“Our Chair in Tralee, together with Special Olympics International and all other partners of the Chair, is at the forefront of supporting inclusive access to health and wellbeing, communities, education, economy and society aligning with the UN Sustainable Development Agenda 2030,” he said.
