The Kerryman (South Kerry Edition)

Tralee’s bumpy streets are not very welcoming

-

SIR, In a recent report in The Kerryman under the headline ‘State funds should reflect tourism’, Tralee Council calls for more funds on high tourist numbers and a low rates base. The only reported reference to roads was made by Kerry County Coiuncil Chief Executive Moira Murrell who said they need funding, particularly for infrastructure such as roads and water.

I often wonder about the downturn of business in Tralee in recent years and where and what are those responsible doing about it. Talk is cheap – they can hold their meetings but it seems to me that nothing positive is happening. We have Councillors, the Tralee Alliance Group, Mayors and others and have they any idea or knowledge about the deterioration of this once great business town?

The condition of our streets, roads and footpaths is atrocious and it certainly is not red-carpet treatment for our special tourist visitors. Surely, this being the tourist season and with our surrounding beautiful resorts, Tralee should be booming.

Why did they spend millions in the Mall when they could have laid this money on our streets and footpaths? Quite recently the council carried out work on the Oakpark Road and it is a pleasure to drive on this little stretch of road with the newly laid tarmac.

Surely every road around Tralee should be resurfaced in the same manner. They should also deal with car parking fees and give one hour free, the same as towns in other counties. Sincerely, Philomena Fitzgerald, North Circular Road, Tralee.

?? ?? The refurbished Mall in Tralee – maybe the money would have been better spent on roads and footpaths.
