“I think every year you just approach it and you go at it and you try and win it. You want to win the Munster championship. It’s who we are and where we are from and it guarantees you the straight route into Croke Park and the Super 8 as well now. We’re not thinking too much about any records associated with the win though, we just want to move on and prepare for the next game.

“You can train and prepare for that in advance, but sometimes you come up against players good enough to score them [goals] no matter what you do to try and stop it.

“The lads steadied themselves well though and applied themselves. They had prepared very professionally and wanted to build on the Clare game in Killarney.

“The way you have to view it I feel is that we got a lot right today. Cork will gather themselves and I don’t think it will be any different to the Mayo game last year in Limerick in the qualifiers which they should have won. I would expect a similar response from them again this time.”

It’s hugely disappointing result and performance from us. We have to put it behind us very quickly because we have a very quick turnaround to the next game in two weeks’ time.

“I’ll be honest, that’s one thing I didn’t see coming today, but it’s happened and we have to get on with it.

“You’re beaten by 17 points, a black card... I felt the black card calls, a couple that were given which probably weren’t, a couple that weren’t given were.

“We just have to suck that up, we can’t complain. We were beaten too comprehensively for that to be a factor in what we can talk about.

“Our big problem was that Kerry didn’t want us to run the ball out and blocked up the centre very well, they worked hard to stop us.

“We hadn’t enough people supporting the ball carrier when we came out with the ball and we ended up being turned over: I think it was 19 times in the first half. Some of those were very cheap, losing the ball in contact.
