Residents frustrated over long-term parking in estates

PASSENGERS heading away on their holidays from Kerry Airport are avoiding paying parking charges by using the nearby housing estate and school for their vehicles for weeks on end.

That was the warning from a local councillor at a meeting of the municipal district authority recently, which heard that some holidaymakers are avoiding car parking charges at the airport by now leaving their vehicles in local estates.

Frustrated residents of the Parkview Housing Estate in Farranfore have called on Kerry County Council to take action and halt the public using the estate as a car park while on holidays.

The situation has become worse in recent months with a number of incidents of the kind reported locally.

A vehicle was parked close to Knockaderry National School over two months ago and remains in situ at present.

The owner of the vehicle has been traced, but the battery has been disconnected, and no keys are available to move the vehicle while the owner is out of the country.

In another incident a motorist parked his vehicle in the Parkview estate and is then believed to have cycled to Kerry Airport, leaving the car parked in the private estate for a week, Cllr Brendan Cronin claimed at the meeting.

The parking situation was raised by the Killarney councillor at the Killarney Municipal Meeting last week, and he said the situation is unfair to residents of the estate.

Kerry County Council officials have agreed to put up signs signalling that parking is only for residents.

Cllr Cronin said that it was “unusual” but that these situations were occurring and residents are fed up of their estate being used as a car park.

“How would these people like it if their driveway was used as a car park for a week?

“They just locked the vehicle and went off.

“This is not fair on residents or on the school.”
