Muckross finish top at 233rd Killarney regatta
MUCKROSS and Fossa were the big winners at the 233rd Killarney Regatta held at Lough Leane at the weekend, with the clubs taking 12 wins between them on a day graced by lovely rowing conditions.
With temperatures slightly lower than in the days leading up to the historic regatta, hundreds attended the event in perfect conditions for the sport.
Muckross and Fossa took six wins apiece, with the former narrowly winning the points classification from the latter. Workmen also performed well, taking three wins (minor men, minor ladies, and senior ladies), with Flesk Valley also notching up a victory in the juvenile ladies competition.
Muckross’ wins came in the junior ladies, junior men, veterans men, veterans ladies, junior men’s fours, and senior ladies fours categories, with Fossa winning in the juvenile men, senior men, novice ladies, novice men, junior ladies fours, and senior men’s fours competitions.
In thanking all the clubs for their participation and co-operation, Regatta Committee Secretary Conor Griffin also thanked Killarney Golf and Fishing Club, as well as sponsors and a wide range of volunteers. He also acknowledged there was much poignancy to the occasion.
“A fitting and well-deserved tribute was paid to John Kelly, who passed away earlier this year and gave great service to the sport of rowing in Killarney at club level and as an officer on Killarney Regatta Committee in various positions over many years,” Mr Griffin said. “A minute’s silence was observed before the Senior Men’s race, with the participating crews holding on the finish line.”
