The Kerryman (South Kerry Edition)
Celebrating Francis’ 44 years’ service
HOLY Family National School marked the end of an era at the close of the academic year last week with the retirement of their Deputy Principal.
Francis Quill spent the last 41 years working in the Tralee school, a mighty career span. During his time in Holy Family, he took on many roles, and he told The Kerryman he enjoyed every minute of it.
“I’ve been teaching for 45 years, 41 of those in Holy Family. It’s been great; two things I really enjoyed being involved with were GAA, and the French exchange programme for 21 years,” Francis said.
“I became Deputy Principal seven years ago and went into learning support then. I used to teach sixth class for much of my career, and seventh class when it existed.
“I have five grandchildren of my own now; despite retirement, I will be kept busy!”
Francis was joined by his wife, Carmel; their children Fergal, Ronan, Declan, Brendan, Louise and Caroline; and staff of the school to celebrate his time there. A function was held in The Meadowlands Hotel.
Francis started his career in Dublin in 1973. Two years later, he came to teach in CBS Primary School, Tralee, and two years after that, he started in Holy Family.
Principal of Holy Family Ed O’Brien said that Francis will be missed by all, including Mr O’Brien himself:
“He gave such a length of time to the school – so much of his life was spent here. When I came to the school nine years ago, he was such a support to me.
“He is known for being so reliable, diligent, trustworthy and a pure gentleman. He was a great teacher and when he went into learning support seven years ago, he did great work in that role too.
“He has literally taught half the town, he is greatly appreciated for all he has done in his career, and we wish him all the best.”
