Pretty Polly solution to housing?

- By SINEAD KELLEHER

KILLARNEY Councillors have agreed that some of the former Pretty Polly site could be used to provide social housing for the town.

Their plans come as Kerry County Council seeks expressions of interest for the former factory site in Killarney, in a bid to come up with a plan for a site that offers huge development potential to the town of Killarney.

The empty factory, formerly Pretty Polly and later Sara Lee, has been lying idle for many years, and the council has said that all proposals will be considered for the site in keeping with the land zoning in place at the site.

Cllr Donal Grady put forward a proposal at this month’s municipal meeting that it should be used for social housing.

He said that while everyone would love to see industry at the site, this may not be a reality as “IDA units are falling down” because of lack of use.

Councillors agreed that the a portion of the site could be used for social housing but that attracting industry is also key.

It was handed over to the then-Killarney town council for the benefit of the town as a large industrial space with huge potential for the development of the town.
