The Kerryman (South Kerry Edition)

Our Super 8 fate becomes clearer

- County Board PRO Leona Twiss with all the GAA news

OUR first game in the Super 8s takes us to Croke Park where we meet Galway.

We await details on the fixture but it will either be on the Saturday or the Sunday (July 14/15). The other two counties in our group will either be Fermanagh or Kildare and Monaghan or Laois. Those qualifier games are fixed for this weekend.

The weekend after the Galway game, we travel to either Laois or Monaghan. There are no ‘Super 8’ games fixed for the last weekend of July and then for the August Bank Holiday we welcome either Fermanagh or Kildare to Killarney. The CCCC will confirm dates and times next Monday.

Group 2 includes the following counties – Donegal, Dublin, Cork or Tyrone and Roscommon or Armagh.

In the event of teams finishing on equal points in a Quarter-Final Group, the tie shall be decided by the following means and in the order specified: (i) Where two Teams only are involved – the outcome of the meeting of the two Teams in the Group (ii) Score difference – subtracting the total Scores against from the total Scores for. (iii) Highest Total Score For (iv) Highest Total Goals For and (v) A Play-Off.

Home Venues shall be subject to approval by the CCCC and must meet the criteria set down by the Health and Safety Committee. The only way of guaranteeing yourself a stand ticket for all Super 8 games involving Kerry is by joining the Kerry GAA Ticket Scheme, email mauriceomeara@kerrygaa.ie for further information.

Munster Success

TWO brilliant games in Austin Stack Park last week, the Juniors were first up on Wednesday night and their first outing was a Munster final.

The game was nip and tuck throughout, but Kerry finished stronger and came away with a two point win over Cork, final score Kerry 2-14, Cork 1-15. The cup was presented by Munster Council Chairman Jerry O’Sullivan to Captain Kieran Murphy (Kilcummin) brother of Shane Murphy who received the Munster Senior Cup only days earlier!

Kerry now face Kildare in the All-Ireland semi-final on Saturday in Navan at 4.45pm. This game is the curtain raiser for the Round 4 qualifier between Fermanagh and Kildare.

Then last Friday night the Under 20s were victorious over Cork, it was a battle for 50 minutes with both sides taking the lead at various times, but the match was won in the last ten minutes.

It was a very hot night and the right decision was taken to allow a water break in both halves. The game ended 3-11 to 0-14.

The Cup was presented by Vice Chairman of the Munster Council Liam Lenihan to Kerry Captain Donal O’Sullivan. Kerry go on to meet the Leinster winners on July 15.

Our congratulations to the Juniors, the Under 20s, Jimmy Keane, Jack O’Connor and their respective management teams on their Munster success

There was a moment silence last Friday night for the late Michael John O’Shea of Castlegregory – Michael John played Minor, Junior and Senior for Kerry – his son Micheál is a current selector with the Kerry U20s, ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

It has been a great spell for Kerry football with a clean sweep of all Munster titles! Tim Slattery reliably informs me this is the third time in history that Kerry have won all four titles.

In 1997 the Kerry beat Clare in the Seniors and Juniors, Kerry beat Cork in the Under 21s and Limerick in the Minors. Then in 2017 Kerry beat Cork in the Seniors, Juniors and Under 21s and Clare in the Minors.
