Cromane 1-13 Skellig Rangers 4-7 A familiar failing, the concession of goals, hurt our seniors at home to Skellig Rangers on Sunday afternoon. Conceding four in total was tough but two in a row early in the second half really dented our confidence.

Our tails were up as we had started the game in fine form and by the 17th minute were 1-5 to 1-1 ahead. Some excellent points from Sean O’Sullivan (outside of the left), Mikey Houlihan, Emmet Casey and Liam Teahan (outside of the right). We rounded off the opening quarter with a well-worked goal with Mikey setting up Sean Bán to punch home. For some reason we stopped doing what had gotten us into that four-point lead and wasted three or four attacks we with long 50/50 Skellig Rangers scooped up possession and started running at us. The result was they dragged themselves back into the game before half-time hitting 1-2 without reply to move a point ahead, 1-5 to 2-3. We settled again and points from a Darren Houlihan free and Emmet Casey from play levelled matter at the break, 1-7 to 2-4. We were well in the contest at this stage but some crucial moments arrived early in the second half, first the Skellig Rangers goalkeeper pulled off a fine save to deny Shane O’Neill goal, after he burst through. Skellig Rangers went down the field from the rebound to goal and within a minute they struck for a second as a series of hand-passes sliced through our backline. These two goals left the men from Portmagee in a very strong position, up 1-7 to 4-4. Once again, just like we have done in numerous games this year, we battled back. The problem is we keep drifting behind in games, giving ourselves uphill tasks every time.

This time, from six points adrift, we got it back to within three on a few occasions but just couldn’t drive on as Skellig Rangers popped with key points to keep us at arm’s length. A series of points in the second half, from Sean O’Sullivan (one a mighty score from a free wide on the right) and Paul Patrick O’Sullivan gave us a respectable score of 1-13 but those four goals conceded were a killer. Scorers: Sean O’Sullivan 1-5 (0-1 free), Paul Patrick O’Sullivan 0-3 (0-2 free), Emmet Casey 0-2, Mikey Houlihan, Liam Teahan 0-1, Darren Houlihan (free) 0-1. Team: Paudie McCarthy; Cathal Crosby, John Michael Foley, Liam Teahan; Finbar Casey, Conor Sugrue, Ethan Griffin; Shane O’Neill, Darren Houlihan; Shane Ahern, Paul Patrick O’Sullivan, Sean Teahan; Emmet Casey, Sean O’Sullivan, Mikey Houlihan. Subs: Eamon O’Connor for E Casey 50m, Danny Shea for Sean Teahan 55m, Aidan O’Sullivan, Padhraic McMahon, Ian Costello. Under-12s: County League (Phase 2) result:
