Three-goal Castleisland see off CB Killarney

DOMINOS PIZZA RESERVE CUP SEMI FINAL

-

Castleisland B 3 CG Killarney 1

WHEN it comes to knock out competitions Castleisland always thrive and they further exemplified this when they booked their place in the Dominos Pizza Reserve Cup Final at Mounthawk Park on Sunday with an impressive win over Division 1A League Champions CG Killarney.

The game got off to a speedy beginning and CG went ahead after just three minutes after a lightening attack from midfield Sam Treharne showed great vision to spot the run of Tadhg Fleming and he raced on to the ball five yards outside the box and gave the Castleisland goalie no chance with an exquisite shot that flew into the roof of the net.

Shortly afterwards Castleisland had a chance to equalise, but Ben Cooney dragged his shot wide. However, they were back on level terms in the 18th minute after a cleverly crafted goal. It came after a corner kick with Shane O’Loughlin providing a great through ball to Ben Cooney and he applied a sublime finish from close range.

They went ahead five minutes later when a Ben Cooney shot was blocked out by a CG defender and Danny Feehan was on to the loose ball in a flash and blasted it to the back of the net in emphatic fashion.

CG then squandered a few scoring chances with Joe Hurley shooting wide when he should have hit the target, he put a close in free kick into the defensive wall while Sam Treharne was denied by a great foot save by Castleisland goalie Kevin Moran.

Castleisland had a scoring chance just before half time but Eamon McLoughlin put his effort wide. Ben Cooney got in behind the CG defence at the start of the second half and as the goalie advanced he tried to chip him, but failed to find the target.

CG got a free kick just on the verge of the box in the 50th minute but John Foley could not get the ball past the defensive wall. Castleisland moved into cruise control in the 54th minute when they scored their third goal.

A great over the top ball from midfield by Sean O’Donoghue had the CG defence at sea and when their goalie advanced he was left in no man’s land and Danny Feehan coolely chipped it over him and into the unguarded net.

To their credit CG done their best to try and pull one back and Sam Treharne had a good chance, but he pulled his shot wide while Gary Cassidy latched on to a Tadhg Fleming cross but headed wide from six yards.

Castleisland had a number of chances to extend their lead from hitting on the counter attack but they were unable to find the net. At the end it was a comfortable win for Castleisland but CG Killarney won’t be too disappointed as they got what they sought from the start of the season and that was winning the league title.

Castleisland will now meet the winners of Mitchels Avenue v Killorglin in the final.
