KDYS raises funds with ‘Spin the Ring’
THEY may have been one of the main beneficiaries of this year’s main Ring of Kerry cycle, but that was not the only recent fund-raiser by the KDYS, which ran its own ‘Spin the Ring’ event around Kerry last Thursday.
KDYS staff, volunteers and some members of the public hopped onto a static bike in eight locations around Kerry – Tralee, Dingle, Killarney, Listowel, Castleisland, Killorglin, Kenmare and Cahersiveen – in a bid to cycle the 175kms of the Ring of Kerry cycle.
A hardy young volunteer, who was mercifully shaded from the worst of the sun, was up on the static bike in Tralee when The Kerryman arrived down, while volunteers gratefully accepted a number of welcome donations from the public.
All the money raised from the cycle is going towards the KDYS Building Communities fund.
“The KDYS is a youth organisation, and we have a number of different youth projects,” said Caroline Duane, speaking to The Kerryman on Thursday. All of the money raised here today and through the rest of the ‘Spin the Ring’ cycles around Kerry today, will go towards developing the service.”
Founded in 1971, the KDYS works to provide a wide range of activities for young people right across Kerry, the Beara Peninsula and north west Cork.
Some of the services that the KDYS provides are the ‘Prevention of Drugs and Alcohol’ service, family support, youth clubs, cafés, and education and training.
