Rare breeds, floral art and feis make Kilgarvan Show a hit
IT’S one of the most popular Sunday’s in Kilgarvan’s calendar year, and it’s easy to see why given the huge crowds that make the Kilgarvan Show the success it is.
THE show brings together the highest quality animals, cookery, fashion, businesses, home and leisure, ingenuity, trade, rare breeds, arts and crafts for all the family to enjoy. And the 2018 Kilgarvan Show didn’t disappoint.
The fine weather made its own contribution to the day, as did the food village and arts and crafts section which went down a treat with visitors.
One of the show’s strengths is that it manages to attract people from the west Cork region as well as Kerry. Moreover, the show is far from just a one day wonder as it starts on Friday evening with the annual children’s fancy dress parade.
From Saturday through to Sunday morning the exhibitors and competition contestants bring their wares to the field in preparation for the show.
Horticulture and Farm life is a major part of what the show has to offer and when you add the various classes of fruit and vegetable, farm produce, potatoes, cut flowers, pot plants, floral art and honey, crafts and needlework, arts and photography – it adds to the day.
The addition of a Children’s Feis was a major draw this year, as was the annual dog show. The show is not without its hard work and it’s all down to a committee who put their shoulder to the wheel each year.
“We’re delighted with how it went. We had a massive crowd and I think the extra events we had this year made the difference,” said Helen O’Sullivan, Chairperson of the Kilgarvan Show.
“The arts and crafts and dog show were huge events with the popular Munster puppy parlour a big draw. The key to the festival is to keep evolving it while keeping the traditional events in place. We were way up in sheep and cattle numbers this year. It’s hard work organising it and I want to thank the great committee we have. Of course the show is nothing without the people who come and enjoy it, and I want to thank them also. We’ll be sitting down again in the coming weeks to start organising next year’s show,” Helen added.
