Timeless concoction of music and fun

PUCK FAIR FESTIVAL KICKS OFF THIS FRIDAY, AUGUST 10

- By STEPHEN FERNANE

WHAT’S as old as the hills but returns each year bigger and better? Well, it’s Puck Fair of course, and the Killorglin festival is all set to present its timeless concoction of music, flair and fun.

It’s one of Ireland’s oldest festivals, and you would need a lifetime’s research to discover one with as much character and rustic charm as Puck. And with this year’s dates falling on a weekend – Friday, August 10, to Sunday, August 12 – it’s sure to be one to remember.

The recently unveiled King Puck mural on the wall of the CYMS is a welcome addition to this year’s proceedings and will no doubt act as a quirky and colourful backdrop for thousands of selfies over the weekend. The opportunity to meet the real-life King Puck is also a thoroughly enjoyable one for visiting families eager to get a photo with the famous royal.

Evan’s Field from 6am on Friday is the first port of call as the annual horse fair kick-starts the festival.

This is one of Ireland’s oldest and continuously run horse fairs, and it’s an event synonymous with Puck Fair.

The Coronation Parade and Ceremony starts at 5.30pm when King Puck finally makes his entrance. The parade includes vibrant floats, marching bands, colourful characters and entertainers.

The town won’t be short on entertainment too with The Swing Cats on Friday evening and Cosmic Funk on Saturday evening in The Square.

And once the annual Dethronement Parade and Ceremony is finished on Sunday – a parade that says farewell to King Puck as he makes his way back to the Kerry Mountains – Dancing with the Stars winner Jake Carter takes to the stage to add a touch of stardust to the festival.

And there’s more too with the annual fireworks display at midnight on Sunday.

Puck Fair President Declan Mangan said it promises to be a busy three days for the people and businesses of Killorglin.

“Puck is always a hectic time for everyone involved in the festival, both directly and indirectly, but it is undoubtedly our favourite time of year here in Killorglin,” Declan said.

“We love welcoming new faces to the town over the course of Puck Fair and seeing familiar faces return, so the hard work that goes on behind the scenes for months in advance is always worthwhile.”

Meanwhile, Puck Fair Chairman Declan Falvey is equally enthusiastic, saying the town is ready and waiting.

“We’re getting more and more excited the closer it gets, as this year’s schedule of events is particularly impressive,” he said.

“There’s a great buzz around Jake Carter’s performance, while the usual big events like the Horse Fair, Coronation Parade and fireworks and more will, undoubtedly, be as popular as ever.

“The committee have been getting stuck in to make Puck Fair the best yet, so we’re hoping for a great turnout this year. It’s definitely one not to be missed!” For more information, visit www.puckfair.ie/schedule.
