The Kerryman (South Kerry Edition)

The blooming brilliance of the Knocknagoshel Pattern Rose...

-

THE Knocknagoshel Pattern Rose is one of the most enjoyable events of the week-long festival as local girls take to the stage before their family and friends. There’s always huge interest among the contestants and this year will be no exception. There’s still time to register if you fancy taking part, and it all takes place at O’Connor’s Bar on Friday, August 17 at 8pm

Each girl’s hobbies and interests will be discussed on stage with Radio Kerry’s Francis Jones who is MC for the evening. Each onstage interview will also be streamed on Facebook Live for any relatives unable to attend.

“It’s a very popular evening, especially with the girls’ families, and it’s one of the main events of our festival. Some of the girls may recite a poem, or sing a song. But it’s really up to themselves as it’s all just a bit of fun,” said committee member, Donal O’Connor.

Carmel Russell of That’s Perfect, The Mall, Tralee, is sponsoring the tiara for the winning Rose, and Carmel will be one of the judges this year. The winner in 2018 will also have the option of entering the Kerry Rose competition in 2019.

Proceeds from this year’s event will again go towards supporting the Kerry/Cork Health Link Bus. Last year’s Pattern Rose managed to raise €2,000, so the hope is very much they can reach or exceed this target in 2018. Previously, the event was known as the Knocknagoshel Carnival Queen, but it has since evolved over the years to keep pace with a new generation of young women. This will be the ninth year of the festival in its current format and local businesses play a huge part as it’s thanks to their generous sponsorship that helps keep it going. Donal concluded: “I just want to pay a special mention to the late Sarah Morrissey who sadly passed away earlier this year. Sarah was a valued member of our committee and she did great work over the years. She will be very much missed.”
