Tralee’s Jason O’Regan has to settle for second in Listowel Scratch Cup

SEVENTY-ONE players took part in Monday’s Listowel Scratch Cup with victory going to former National Matchplay and Strokeplay winner Ray Murphy of St Annes in Cork as he held off Tralee’s Jason O’Regan by a single stroke. Murphy finished the tournament with a total of 26 under par, one better than O’Regan with 25 under as Listowel’s own Killian O’Gorman finished third with a score of 20 under par. The Final 18 prize in the event also went to Cork as Collins’ Eoin Walsh shot a score of seven under par.

The Intermedia­te competitio­n was dominated by Deerpark with James Fleming winning another Intermedia­te section prize with a score of 12 under par, two ahead of his club-mate John O’Brien on 10 under. The Junior grade came down to countback between Listowel club-mates John Carey and Nicky Barry after both finished on three under par with John claiming first prize with a better ‘Back 18’. The Ladies 0-10 prize was won by Castleisla­nd’s Julianne Broderick meanwhile. This weekend sees the Kerry Inter-County teams in action in the Munster Championsh­ips in Parteen with the Intermedia­te team of Gearóid Cronin, James Fleming and John O’Brien (Deerpark) along with Tralee duo Eamon Sheehy and Padraig Hobbart and Listowel’s Killian O’Gorman in action on Saturday.

Sunday, meanwhile, sees the Kerry Senior, Junior and U-16 teams in action. Castleisla­nd’s James Dignan, Deerpark trio Damien Fleming, John McGrath and Jason O’Brien, Listowel’s Declan McCarron and Tralee’s Jason O’Regan makes up the senior side as Listowel trio Nicky Barry, Cathal Dennehy and John Heffernan along with Tralee duo David Hobbert and Tim Scannell and Deerpark’s Noel Moynihan make up the Junior side. The two Kerry U-16 sides meanwhile comprise the all Deerpark team of Eoin O’Riordan Looney, Cillian Courtney, Robbie Harnett and Jack McCarthy with the second side made up of Erin Moloney and Fintan Martin (both Deerpark) along with Listowel duo Conor Leahy and Jake Shine.

Next Tuesday (August 14) is the Danny Nolan Memorial Scramble in Newmarket at 6.30pm. Entry €5 per player.
