Adjusting to student life is easier than you think…

-

GOING to college for the first time is an exciting adventure but it can also be very daunting. Adjusting to a new city, making new friends, leaving old ones, being responsible for yourself and getting used to lectures instead of classrooms can all be overwhelming to the newcomer.

It’s sometimes hard to admit you’re finding the transition difficult when those around you seem to be taking to college new life like ducks to water. But many first-years can feel a little lost. If you feel like this come September, chat with someone at the Student Service Centre who will offer tips and advice on how to make the most of college life and settle in.

Going to a student counsellor to talk things through will also get you up and running. Or perhaps even a one-to-one chat with lecturers can make you feel more confident about your studies. Plus, there’s bound to be a friend who has already been through their first-year experience, ask them for help.

Making new friends is an important part of the college experience and there are plenty of clubs and societies to join. Freshers’ Week is a great stress release and a good way to get involved and have some fun. You’ll find your niche eventually, and your social life will start to thrive within your new circle.

Adjusting to college life is all about balance - attending lectures and staying active in clubs and societies, going out with friends, learning how to be independent, managing your time and money wisely and looking after your health. It can all seem daunting at first but then again, isn’t everything in life worth doing a little daunting at first? Stay focused and enjoy the best years of your life.
