KILLARNEY LEGION

-

CO.LEAGUE RD 10: Killarney Legion 0-12 Beaufort 1-11The final round of this years county league ended in a two point defeat for the seniors.Truth be told the performance was lethargic and disjointed and removed from the standard reached up to this point. Beaufort showed a dogged resilience and despite facing a stiffish breeze trailed by a manageable two points at the break. The Legion were bolstered by the welcome return of Brian Kelly in goal who brought off a number of top class saves and James O’Donoghue who registered 7 pts.a number of which were of the highest quality. The critical moment from the Legions point of view came halfways through the second half when leading by two points the forwards created a one on one goal chance but unfortunately overelaboration saw the chance wasted due to a foul on the ball. It was to prove costly as Beaufort took full advantage and in less than a couple of minutes hit 1-1 to take control of the game. The Legion cut the deficit to a pt.but with time almost up they added a second to give them the win.Damien O’Sullivan was well in control at fullback until he had to retire after injury and young Mike Pierce showed an urgency and purpose on the ball that sadly was missing from the home teams play.U16 GIRLSThe u16 girls played Ballymac in the Co.Semi-final in Derreen and having beaten the same opposition earlier knew that the visitors would be well up for this game, and so it proved as a lighteneing start saw them race into a 1-2 to o-o lead early in the first half.

Having weathered the early pressure the Legion hit back with 1-2 and looked to be well in contention but Ballymac came again with another 1-1 just at the break. Despite the setback the second half saw the Legion girls whittle away at the gap and due to sustained good play got their noses in front by the narrowest of margins. However the effort obviously took a lot out of them and Ballymac rallied once more to build a 5 pt lead which saw them qualify for the final. Disappointment for the panel and their mentors but proud of their performances throughout the year, which saw them win 6 out of 7 matches.Best wishes for a speedy recovery also to Aoibhe O’Doherty who suffered and injury early on in the game.
