Kerry’s students come up trumps with exam results

- By SINEAD KELLEHER

LEAVING Cert students across Kerry are preparing for their next steps following the CAO offers on Monday last. With news that most courses did not see a points jump, it hopefully means that students got their choice of course following their anxious waits for the dreaded Leaving Cert results.

Thankfully, students and principals in Kerry were happy with the results, and more than a few students achieved the maximum results of 625.

This included Eadaoin O’Donoghue, a student at St Brigid’s Presentation Secondary School in Killaney who was shocked at the result.

Principal Roisin Moore was delighted to see such a high result at the school and said that Eadaoin and all the girls proved that hard work pays off.

“We are delighted with the girls; 25 per cent of our students got over 500 points. We are incredibly proud,” she said.

She added that the school also had great results in the Leaving Cert Applied, with 67 per cent of students receiving a distinction – the highest possible mark.

There were some tears but mainly shouts of joy as students received the results at the Killarney school last Wednesday morning.

Over in St Brendan’s College in Killarney, the boys were taking the occasion in their stride, but most were happy with the results and delighted that the ordeal was finally over.

Here, too, there were plenty of high achievers. Principal Sean Coffey said that results across the entire county were strong.

“There is a great value on education in Kerry. The results this year are strong here at the school and in Kerry.

“We are delighted with our students’ achievements. They were largely above expectations,” he added.

He said that the failure rate in maths and science subjects was much lower than the national average, marking the day as a great result for the school and for the students themselves.

There was also great excitement at Killarney Community College, where students were also thrilled with their results and relieved that the day had finally come.

There was some nervous faces outside the door as they waited to collect them, but this mainly changed to excitement and happiness when they got the paper in their hands. Among them was Marc Dalton, who not only got his Leaving Cert results on Wednesday but also celebrated his 18th birthday on the same day.

Meanwhile, at the Intermediate School Killorglin, there were smiles too as 14 per cent of students achieved over 550 points, with three achieving over 600 points.
