- By SINEAD KELLEHER

AN Post have confirmed this week, following months of speculation, that 12 Kerry post offices will shut their doors.

The Kerry post offices to close are Asdee, Ballinskelligs, Ballylongford, Ballymacelligott, Banemore Cross, Currow, Duagh, Gneeveguilla, Kilflynn, Knocknagoshel, Mastergeehy and Moyvane.

26 post offices in Kerry were offered exit or redundancy packages in the county earlier this year as part of a modernisation plan for the post office network across the country. The plan was agreed by An Post and the Irish Postmasters Union (IPU).

Post offices had until July 31 to accept or decline the package. However, while a number of post offices had already informed the public of their decision to close a full list of how many would close in Kerry was not released by An Post until this week.

In total, 159 post offices are to close in the country – the highest number in Galway which will lose 18 post offices followed by Donegal which will lose 17. Cork and Kerry are next on the list with 12 closures in each county. Kilflynn Post Office has already shut its doors and locals have launched a campaign to try and save the local service. A public meeting will take place on Wednesday next, September 5, to fight to retain this service.

It is not yet known when the remainder will close but it is expected that most will close quickly. Their business will be transferred to other local post offices in the region according to An Post .
