Go easy with technology, just for one day...

-

PHONES are now an omnipotent force in our lives with few occasions where they don’t play a role. So much so that it’s now the person who isn’t taking selfies, photos or live recordings that’s seen as the one removed from reality. It’s time we all thought about this.

On the one hand, iPhones seem perfect for weddings: an instant way of capturing and sharing pictures of the big occasion. But there’s also a downside. By all means take pictures, after all it’s just the same as bringing a camera around with you like the old days!

However, have a little savvy. Know when to use your phone and when not to. Different people take a different approach to how a wedding should be celebrated. For example, some feel the formalities should be treated with respect and reserve. You might think having your phone go off in church is no big deal during the wedding ceremony. But others do.

Likewise, during the reception when speeches are happening, stay off the phone unless you’re taking pictures. How rude do you think it will look to the newlyweds if you’re stuck gazing at your phone when the day’s most intimate words and thoughts are being shared?

You also need to be understanding of the wedding’s privacy. Sharing a nice picture of yourself enjoying the day on social media is perfectly fine. But avoid going over the top by sharing every detail of the day. Not everyone appreciates having themselves on social media while eating their meal or dancing.

Respect the other guests’ right to privacy. Some wedding couples now ask for technology embargos at weddings as they feel iPhones stop people from interacting and enjoying themselves in a way that comes naturally. Some food for thought there.
