The Kerryman (South Kerry Edition)
Social Action Group Rathmore CLG
THIS Social Action Group is by far one of the most successful in the country given the huge amount of work it has done over three decades. Through the creation of its positive ‘person centred’ and caring approach in all its departments, the Rathmore based group abides by the key ingredients of volunteerism and motivation. Volunteers are encouraged to work as part of a team and to come up with new ideas which are always appreciated. Its managers and leaders are very supportive and highly motivated themselves with a focus on sharing its mission and vision. Employees and volunteers enjoy the feel good factor that comes from caring for some of the most vulnerable people in the community. The Social Action Group Rathmore CLG was founded in 1975 to give young people an opportunity to make a difference in their community and to brighten up the lives of people. Today, it caters for over a hundred older people every day through its sheltered houses, day care centre, laundry and meals on wheels, which is a vital service for older generations. Its latest project was the purchase and renovation of the Local Presentation Convent; a beautiful old listed building at the cost of €1.2 million. Their approach to reviving and converting existing buildings in the community for sheltered accommodation is a highly innovative and beneficial one. The fact that it is locally funded with support from the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle make it even more deserving of consideration. They also have their own community creativity centre run as an enterprise providing facilities for young people and others. This is one community organisation with an impressive CV of achievements.
