VALENTIA Islanders were shocked and saddened at the unexpected death on Wednesday, October 10, of John (Seán) O’Driscoll of Ballinteer, Dublin, and formerly of Valentia.

Originally of Dohilla on the northern side of the Island, he was a regular visitor here and only recently holidayed in Valentia for three days with his brother Maurice(Mossie).

A number of us met John in the company of Mossie in the Royal Hotel, Knightstown, and we had a right good chat as he recalled days of times past in Valentia and island friends long gone. He was in great and sprightly spirit, and so his death is all the more shocking.

The late John was also delighted to have met his old Valentia neighbour, Pat Lynch of Gortgower, Valentia, now retired, who gave his life travelling the world as a ship captain. They had not met for 50 years.

Born in Dohilla in 1937, John O’Driscoll was the eldest of four boys and born girls born to Alice (née Bowler) and Patrick O’Driscoll.

After completing his secondary school education he began his working life in the Irish Glass Bottle Company in Dubin and worked there until he retired 15 years ago.

He was predeceased by his brother, Patrick, who passed away earlier this year.

Sincere condolences are offered to his wife, Cora; daughter, Alison; son, Patrick; daughter-in-law, Michelle; grandchildren, Ben and James; sisters, Mary, Ann and Alice; brothers, Maurice (Mossie) and Michael; brother-in-law; sisters-in-law; nephews; niece; relatives and friends.

He will be fondly remembered by his extended family and many friends in both Dublin and Valentia.

John was laid to rest in Ballinteer.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.
