Mike’s legacy to causes in Kerry and Cork
CORK UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL AND LOCAL SCHOOLS RECEIVE FUNDS
THE memory of Mike Tangney or ‘Small Mike’ will live on forever thanks to the generous donations made in his honour this week.
Following his death almost a year ago at the age of just 44, his family and friends came together to remember the Black Valley man by organising a seven-a-side football blitz, ‘Small Mikes All-Ireland’, last month.
It was a fitting tribute to the local man whose love of football was well known, and it was such a success that it raised €30,000.
This money was presented to the chosen charities at a special presentation at Kate Kearney’s on Friday night.
The recipients of the money were charities close to Mike and his family and included the Cystic Fibrosis Unit at Cork University Hospital, which received €10,000. Mike’s nephew has Cystic Fibrosis, so the family wanted to thank the hospital for the care they provide to CF patients. €10,000 was also donated to the GA ward at CUH, where Mike’s brother was treated following an accident.
The final €10,000 was divided between three local national school autistic units – at Cullina National School, Fossa National School and St Oliver’s National School.
This week his sister, Siobhan, thanked the public for their support for the event which took place in early September.
The blitz was followed by a dance at Kate Kearney’s, completing a fantastic day of entertainment for all the community and a fitting tribute to ‘Small Mike’.
“We want to thank everyone who supported us in any way, and we are delighted to present the proceeds,” she said.
