Garda raid uncovers €50k worth of cannabis in Dingle growhouse

-

APPROXIMATELY

€50,000 worth of cannabis was seized by

Gardaí who uncovered a sophisticated ‘growhouse’ during a targeted raid on a house in

Dingle late last week.

Members of the Kerry Divisional Drugs

Unit seized the cannabis in a rented premises in the John Street area of Dingle, which was raided on foot of a search warrant at 10pm last Thursday night.

The haul of drugs found in the house was made up of 60 cannabis plants, valued at about €48,000 and dried cannabis herb with a street value of about €2,000.

It is thought likely that the cannabis, which was being cultivated under lights in what was described as a “fairly sophisticated” operation, was being grown to supply the local market.

No arrests were made at the time of the raid, however the Garda investigation is ongoing and it is expected that suspects will be charged in due course.

While the level of drug abuse in Dingle is considered to be no worse than in similar towns across Ireland, Dingle has been targeted by plainclothes drugs unit officers during busy times of the year in an effort to tackle the problem.

Cannabis is the most commonly abused drug in Dingle and cocaine also features, although not to the extent experienced during the ‘highs’ of the Celtic Tiger boom years.
