TV DEBATES, press coverage and radio interviews highlighting Michael D. Higgins, Joan Freeman, Gavin Duffy and the other presidential hopefuls took a back seat in Currow over the past two weeks.

The picturesque East Kerry Parish was on major election mode as the local community begin the process of electing a new Mayor of the Parish.

The fun event, aimed at raising much needed funds for the continuing development of Currow GAA club, came to an exciting climax on Friday night when the votes were counted. And in a scene reminiscent of a General Election the new Mayor was introduced to the public at a function in Currow Community Centre.

Tralee I.T. student and local GAA star Jack Scanlon, son of former Kerry player Kieran Scanlon, secured the most votes and with it the prestigious title of Mayor of Currow despite a strong and determined challenge from Currow senior football team players Shane O’Leary and Mike McCarthy in addition Louise Nelligan McCarthy, a representative of the Currow Ladies club.

“The Mayor concept created great interest and excitement in the Parish. Votes were just €5 each and all money raised from the campaign will go towards the purchase of a new mower, pitch maintenance, club equipment and the day to day running of this very busy rural club. A sincere thanks to all the candidates who put in trojan work over the past few weeks,” said Currow GAA. chairman, Tom O’Callaghan, who presented the chain of office to the new Mayor.

In his acceptance speech a delighted Jack Scanlon, who secured votes right across the County, said he was humbled to win the contest.

“This event will enhance the facilities at Currow G.A.A. grounds for the benefit of all players and in particular our younger players. As a young player I am delighted to assist this work and realise the important role the club plays in the provision of recreational facilities for the young people of this parish.”
