“Many great men have served as Chairman of this great Board”

-

JOHNNY Brosnan made history on January 2018 by becoming the first member of the Currow GAA Club to be elected as Chairman of the East Kerry GAA Board in its 93-year history.

Currow is a founder member of the East Kerry Board, when on May 17, 1925 the first meeting was held in Killarney. Dick Fitzgerald of Dr Crokes was elected as Chairman and Humphrey Murphy of Currow was elected Vice Chair. Through the years many officer positions have been held by members of the Currow club, but it has taken 93 years for this particular accolade to happen.

The East Kerry region has always produced minor, junior and senior footballers that wore the green and gold of Kerry with distinction. Have no doubt that this trend will continue given the great work currently underway in all clubs and schools. All credit must go to club coaches, teachers, GDAs, and to Vince Cooper and Donal Daly.

East Kerry is committed to enhancing the physical fitness and mental well-being of its youth. Children are under a lot of pressure these days due to educational demands, etc., which is why sport helps in terms of fitness and social inclusion. Johnny Brosnan is a firm believer in youth being allowed to enjoy the game without the intense pressure of winning. He believes this approach will help children, long-term, to be better able cope with adversity.

The East Kerry Board appreciates the sponsorship it receives from everyone, large or small, as it plays a significant role in the region’s success. The major sponsors are: Maurice O’Donoghue and family of The Gleneagle Hotel & Aquila Club; Dr Patrick O’Donoghue’s family, Ollie Flavier, The Shire, and The Kerryman newspaper. Many more local businesses have answered the call for over 16 competitions. The Board is indebted to them and sincerely thanks them.

Johnny Brosnan said: “The importance of sponsorship cannot be overstated as no organisation today can function without it. I would like to thank all club officers, members and officials who support the Board. Without their support we would be unable to run the large fixtures programme every year. I would also like to thank fellow officers and committees, who dedicate their spare time to running the affairs of the East Kerry Board.”

Johnny added that East Kerry is very proud of its culture, music, song and dance with many East Kerry clubs winning All Irelands in senior and junior Scór. Johnny hopes that this tradition will continue during his time as Chairman.

“Through the years many great men have served as Chairman of this great Board and they all brought their own individual style to it. I hope to be able to add to this list of influential members when my term comes to an end. This is one of the leading districts in the county and a strong Board has always been a part of that success,” Johnny added.
