The Kerryman (South Kerry Edition)
East Kerry Scór celebrating 50 years ...
FOUNDED in 1969, the 2018-19 season will mark 50 years of celebrating cultural heritage and the great talent that abounds in the district. In preparation for the season, it is the perfect time to reflect on the importance of Scór and the great contribution it makes to GAA life and the wonderful work carried out by so many in clubs supporting and promoting Scór.
The 2017-2018 season, kindly sponsored by Killarney Credit Union, started in October with the Scór na nÓg competitions at Killarney Racecourse. This provided wonderful entertainment and showcased great talent in dancing, singing, music, singing, recitation and quiz. The county finals saw four clubs: Spa, Kilcummin, Dr Crokes and Glenflesk acquire honours in set and figure dancing, instrumental music, ballad group, solo singing and quiz.
Glenflesk was honoured with the Best Overall Club award. The Munster campaign saw Spa set dancers and Dr Crokes quiz team qualifying to the All-Ireland stage. The dancers claimed the much coveted title. The youngest participants performed in East Kerry Scór na bPáistí last February. Some progressed to county finals in April where a number took titles. These included Gneeveguilla (gold in sean nós dancing), Spa (silver in set dancing), Kilcummin (gold in instrumental music, Firies (silver in solo singing). The more mature contenders for Scór titles competed in Scór Sinsir competitions which began after Christmas. Glenflesk figure dancers and Fossa musicians had a promising presence at Munster finals in March. Fossa secured the top accolade.
These older groups are role models for the younger members. The enjoyment from performing also holds the possibility of leading to an All-Ireland stage representing club, district, county and family amongst the most talented in the country.
