‘Killarney SVP appreciate the public’s generosity...’

FOR those involved with The Society of Saint Vincent De Paul, this time of year is by far their busiest but you will never hear them complain about it. Helping to provide people with their basic needs and allowing them to have as comfortable a Christmas as possible is what matters most.

Looking back on the year, Patricia Lyne of Saint Vincent De Paul says that a big focus has been on providing education grants to young people and this will continue into the future.

“This time of year is so tough on people and families, with the pressures of Christmas and the winter climate, it can be such a challenging time for many,” Patricia explained.

“We have seen that long term, a big focus must be put on helping people succeed in education. Otherwise, the cycle will never be broken.”

Along with paying money directly to colleges and accommodation providers on behalf of young people, they also are providing grants for second level students to aid in buying books and other necessities.

“We have our shop and we have a food bank, so that when we do our visitations to families, we bring food and vouchers from supermarkets, and we also give fuel vouchers. At this time of year, people struggle so much more and welfare doesn’t always cover expenses,” Patricia continued.

“We also are helping to hold breakfast clubs in schools for children to provide them with healthy breakfasts that they may not get otherwise.”

Along with their regular work and fundraising, SVP Killarney will be holding a range of events soon to help raise funds.

“We have a Christmas quiz coming up on December 6 in the Killarney Avenue Hotel at 8.30pm. A table of four is €30 and we hope to see people taking part. We will also be holding a Christmas themed event in Killarney House on December 7, with Santa and carol singing and fun along with some other great events.

“We are under pressure with resources but the people under most pressure are those who we provide for. Sometimes, the hardest thing for someone to do is pick up the phone and ask for help.”

Saint Vincent De Paul would like to add how grateful they are for the support and donations they receive.
