Talented sports stars of Duagh/ Lyre get awards
DUAGH/LYREACROMPANE Community Games held their annual awards night on Friday in an event of great recognition for the superb young sporting talents of the parish.
The awards night rewarded all participants for their efforts in events and activities such as art, music, athletics and team sports such as basketball, soccer, futsal, tag rugby and draughts for 2018. Duagh/Lyre excelled in many areas during the year, and this was due to the hard work of participants supported by their parents, families and community games committee, organisers said.
“The awards night was well-attended, and great thanks goes to parents, as we are aware that in the busy times that we live in, it can be hard to find time,” organising committee member Liz Twomey said.
The awards were presented by Norma Doran and Sheila Cahill, members of Duagh/ Lyre steps to health team, MC on the night was Neilus Collins, and the O’Regan family – Oisín, Daibhéad and Tara – provided the entertainment.
“Our first awards went to our national winners and to athlete Saoirse Dillon; Saoirse won national silver in the Under-12 100m with a year out of age,” Liz explained. “Saoirse is a very talented athlete and has represented Duagh/Lyre for the past four years in athletics at National Community Games.
“Erin Welch, who won National silver in Art in 2018, is a very talented artist who added silver to her collection of bronze and pewter medals for Art; and gold for Project.
“Entertainment on the night was provided by our National Under-12 Group Music winners, Oisín and Daibhéad O’Regan, who played Guns & Roses’ Sweet Child of Mine. The boys received a rapturous round of applause; this was their first national finals. Tara O’Regan went on to represent Duagh/Lyre at National final in long puck and received an award; Tara sang with her brothers Oisín and Daibhéad on the night.
“Dylan Buckley represented Duagh/Lyre in National Finals in the Long Puck at Under-12, a year out of age. Dylan was unlucky not to get through to the last eight, and we are so proud of him. This was Dylan’s first National finals.
“In Cycling on Grass, Duagh/ Lyre had three representatives at National finals: at, under-12, Angharad Cudlipp and Luke Sheridan, and at under-14, Fearghal Cudlipp. All three cyclists put in strong performances in their semi-finals to go through to the finals. In the finals, all three cyclists, Angharad, Luke and Fearghal, made a clean sweep of gold. They received special cycling trophies on the night to reward their efforts. In the Munster competition, we had one team going through in Under-12 Skittles. The team was: Jack Collins, Jack O’Carroll, Denis Gould, Dylan Stack, Aoibhínn Harte, Angharad Cudlipp and Eimear Buckley. Representing our area in County competitions, we had over 100 participants, and each participant received a trophy to mark their efforts.
“Thanks to all our participants in 2018, we made some great memories.
“Our area received a National Area Award and Gold in the Steps to Health campaign. Thanks to everyone who supported and participated in our area in 2018; it is recognised by our committee, and this is the success that we stand on together,” Liz concluded.
