Chef Neven heads to South Kerry

- By FERGUS DENNEHY

KERRY is on the menu for TV celebrity chef Neven Maguire next week as a show covers his visits to some of the finest seafood restaurants in the county.

‘Neven’s Irish Seafood Trails’ will air at 8.30pm on RTÉ One on Wednesday, February 6. It is produced and directed by David Hare of Derrynane-based Inproduction TV.

On Valentia Island, Neven visits the Irish Coast Guard station, where Divisional Controller John Draper explained the crucial role of the Coast Guard in saving lives at sea.

Back on the mainland, Neven calls in to Kerry Fish, Renard, to meet Liam Quinlan, whose family established their business in 1963.

Since then, it has expanded to include a chain of fishmongers, seafood bars, fish-and-chip shops and an organic salmon smokery which supplies customers throughout the world. On the show, Neven will take a tour of the smokery to see how this acclaimed Irish seafood comes together.

After this, Neven takes the short walk to the Point Seafood Bar, where he will sample fresh Irish fish – cooked with a Spanish twist. Chef EJ O’Neill will also take this chance to share a recipe Spanish trawlermen taught his grandfather: Hake a la Romana.

Finally, over in Waterville, Neven visits the Sea Synergy Centre, which promotes marine awareness and education. Together with marine ciologist Lucy Hunt, he heads off rock-pooling, where Neven and Ms Hunt will find some of the extraordinary marine creatures that live on this stunning Atlantic beach.
