Traffic and parking review for Killorglin amid major works

KILLORGLIN PARKING REVIEW SET TO BE UNDERTAKEN, AND BYPASS PROJECT SET TO BE EXAMINED BY TII

- By SINEAD KELLEHER

A REVIEW of parking in Killorglin, which could lead to some paid parking in the town, is to be discussed – and some councillors said paid parking would not be welcomed by local businesses.

Kerry County Council said the park- ing by-laws for Killorglin will be reviewed this year to determine an overall strategy for the town. This would not bring about more spaces, they said, but would examine general parking restrictions.

Killorglin Chamber of Commerce said that while they would not be supportive of paid parking in all locations, some paid parking would help the town if it led to more parking spaces.

Many feel that Killorglin does not have enough parking spaces.

The parking review comes amid works which have led to a temporary one-way traffic system in the town, a system which has been greeted by some as helping alleviate congestion in the town.

Killorglin Chamber Alliance Chairman Gerard Counihan said traffic has been flowing well with the one-way system – so much so that the Chamber is asking the council to examine if keeping this traffic system would help.

The chamber’s view is shared by many, but some feel that traffic is still an issue for the town.

Last Thursday, motorists endured long delays on the Cahersiveen side of the town, which were believed to have been a one-off, rather than a symptom of the works.

The current works are part of a €3.6m investment in the town from the Church in Killorglin out to Astellas on the Tralee road.

Meanwhile, there is also progress on the proposed Killorglin by-pass. Though the project is still in its early days and without funding, Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) is to take the first step in the development of a by-pass for the town.

TII is to undertake a project appraisal plan for the Killorglin by-pass in the first quarter of this year. This plan will look at the objectives of the by-pass and the key problems to be addressed.
