Community College students excel at ETB awards
KERRY Education and Training Board (KETB) held its annual student awards ceremony on Friday January 18, 2019, at its headquarters in Tralee.
Eight post-primary schools throughout Kerry make up this organisation, which serves close on 3,000 students, and Castleisland Community College is one of these schools.
The awards cover all areas of school life, including both academic and extracurricular activities.
Ryan Maguire was presented with the School Academic Excellence Award for the highest points in the Leaving Cert in 2018.
He was an exemplary student throughout his five years at Castleisland Community College.
Ryan had a particular flair for the science and technology subjects and is a worthy recipient of this award.
He is now studying Pharmacy at UCC where, undoubtedly, the traits he displayed at second level will assist him in his studies.
Kevin Mahony won the Best Technology Award having been deemed the best technology student across all eight KETB schools.
Kevin showed a great love for all three technology subjects very early in his days at Castleisland Community College.
He excelled in Metalwork, Material Technology Wood and Technical Graphics.
Kevin is now studying Primary School Teaching in Mary Immaculate College. He will no doubt inspire the youth of tomorrow to follow in his footsteps.
Siobhán O’Donoghue won a Junior Certificate Academic Excellence Award for her exploits in her 2018 exams.
Siobhán exhibits a strong work ethic, and coupled with this is her commitment to always do her best, thus resulting in work which is consistently of a high standard.
Gemma Burke won an award for her performance in Béaltrialacha Roghnacha sa Ghaeilge an Teastais Shóisearaigh.
‘Aois na hóige aois na glóire’, mar a deirtear, agus tá sé fíor maidir le Gemma Burke.
Gemma was awarded 100 per cent in her Junior Cert Oral Irish Examination, an accomplishment that only a select number of students across the country can boast of.
Nathan Egan received a Student Council Award.
Nathan has been a valuable member of the council since he was nominated by his peers when he was in first year.
He organises activities, is an engaging member and has an excellent rapport with other members of the council.
Tommy Boyle was recognised for Exceptional Involvement in School Life at Junior Cycle
Tommy actively takes part in the Student Council, which he has been a member of throughout Junior Cycle.
Tommy has also been involved in the School Music Group and has given freely of his own time to perform at school events.
Ava Fitzmaurice received a Certificate of Sporting Achievement.
Ava represented Ireland in Girl’s Boxing at European Tournaments, where she won two gold medals to add to her All-Ireland title in the girls 53kg category, which she won in April 2018.
An all-round sportswoman, Ava has also won All-Ireland Community Games gold medals in athletics and basketball.
Also among the winners was Seán Barrett, who received a Certificate of Sporting Achievement
Seán represented Ireland at European level in Under-16 Cycling and has done so again in Junior Cycling.
Sean is one to look out for in a sport which provides great opportunities for the kind of dedication and talent which he has in abundance.
Ruth Borgeat received a Transition Year Award.
Ruth was a mentor to first years and was part of the national winning Young Social Innovators team.
She was the AIB Build a Bank Manager that reached the national finals, and she was part of the Junk Kouture team that reached the regional finals.
Finally, Denise Crowley won a Peer Mentor Award.
Denise participated fully in the Peer Mentoring Training and showed great interest in learning the skills necessary to be a good mentor.
She showed great leadership qualities and understood the impact she had on those around her.
The management and staff at Castleisland Community College are very proud of all their award winners.
