BANK OF IRELAND MUNSTER JUNIOR CUP Castleisland 32 Nenagh 5

CASTLEISLAND produced their finest performance of the season when they dispatched Nenagh out of the Munster Junior cup in a game that was played in windy, but dry, conditions at the Crageens last Sunday.

The foundation for the home sides victory lay in their forwards dominance throughout the game, with the returning Pat Fitzgerald putting in a towering performance. Castleisland lined out without their talisman Mike Cronin, but it mattered little as Kieran Downey helped himself to two good tries.

The consistent Connie Reynolds also went over the whitewash, whilst Jack Griffin and Shane Flynn were also celebrating with a try apiece.

Castleisland out-half Brian Leonard brought his shooting boots and helped himself to three conversions and two penalties. Nenagh’s solitary reply was a try from Gerard O’Gorman.

Castleisland’s win sets up a mouth watering home derby against local rivals Abbeyfeale next Sunday.

As a J1 side Abbeyfeale will be expected to take the honours, but if Castleisland can reproduce the form that they showed against Nenagh then a shock result may be on the cards.

Ballincollig 25 Tralee 22

TRALEE put in a fine performance but ultimately had to succumb to Ballincollig’s superior fire power in a rip roaring Junior Cup contest last Sunday.

Tralee travelled with high hopes of lowering the Cork J2 sides colours, but in the end they had to concede second best despite putting the winners to the pin of their collars for a large portion of the game. The loss meant that Tralee will now go on to play in the Munster Junior Plate where they will entertain Charleville next Sunday.

Fionnan McDermott and Vincent Browne scored tries for Ballincollig who were also awarded a penalty try. Tony Keating kicked two penalties and a conversion. Eoin O’Carroll and Ben O’Neill scored tries for Tralee, O’Neill and Jack Quilter each kicked two penalties.
