PORTMAGEE played host to an exciting and open encounter between last year’s league winners, Dromid, and the home side.

Diarmuid Keating kicked some fine scores in the opening half giving the Portmagee men a 0-5 to 0-1 after 20 minutes. The pick of them came after Podge O’Sullivan’s kick out was fielded by Bernard Walsh who combined John Murphy into the play resulting in Keating landing from forty yards.

Despite some good defending by full-back Ml Sheehan and centre-back Padraig J O’Sullivan it took a Dominick O’Sullivan goal at the other end to ignite the holders challenge. By half-time they had cut the gap to one point, 0-6 to 1-2.

Niall O’Shea forged Pearses clear after the resumption and when Dominick O’Sullivan netted his second goal the game looked past the Portmagee side. They were handed a lifeline when Michael L O’Sullivan was upended in the square, but Shane J O’Sullivan made a splendid save from the resulting penalty.

Undaunted Skellig Rangers drew level after Brendy Murphy finished to the net following a goalline scramble. Dairmuid and Ml Keating pointed, but the home sides endeavours were wiped out once John GG O’Shea netted his side’s third goal.

Niall O’Shea, Keelan Farley, Dominick O’Sullivan and substitute Daniel Curran added to the winners total to see Dromid open their campaign with a five point victory. They face Waterville at home this weekend.

Waterville 5-14 Sneem/Derrynane 2-5

TWO teams with a new sprinkling of youth lined out at Derrrynane on Sunday.

Waterville started the brighter and established a nine-point lead, 3-8 to 2-2, at the change of ends. Barry O’Dwyer along with the O’Sullivan (Batt) brothers Jamie and Gearoid finding the net for Waterville, while Tim Murphy and Shane McGillicuddy replied for Sneem / Derrynane.

The second half belonged to Waterville who added two further goals through Alan and Sam O’Dwyer to consolidate their commanding position. A young Sneem / Derrynane team, many playing their first senior game, under the stewardship of Kieran Burns had decent performers in Paudie McGillicuddy, Seán O’Connor, Conor O’Brien, Rory Galvin and the O’Sullivan brothers Tadgh and Mike.

It was a combined team effort from Waterville with a strong family connection throughout. The Cliffords, O’Dwyers, Cronins and O’Sullivan (Batt) brothers showing good in an encouraging start for Eanna De Buis’ charges.
